I almost got blown of the road twice today – it was THAT windy! The first time the wind gust was very intense, but only lasted about 1/2 second. If it had continued for 2 or 3 seconds, I’m sure I would have been pushed to the side of the road. Then it just kept getting worse and I really had to fight to stay on the road. The second time it was a combination of strong winds and my not being right on top of things. I was pushed onto the right-hand shoulder and either the wind let up just a bit and/or I finally made the right steering input, but I made it back into my lane. Phew! This was absolutely the worst day of the trip. I don’t see how it could get any worse (assuming that by the time I do decide to leave, the conditions that brought such fierce winds will have changed), so that means the rest of the trip should be better.
I didn’t have to stop for lunch, so that saved some time. I got some supplies yesterday and ate those throughout the day. I tried to call my Rushville hosts, but I didn’t have any cell phone signal, so I stopped at a place with a “old school” pay phone. I haven’t used one of those in years!
I left Pine, Colorado about 8:30am. It was quite nice when I started out, but it kept getting hotter as the day progressed and eventually got up to 100F again. Before it got that hot, I broke out the water vest, soaked it, and put it on. Once again, it made the high temps almost bearable.
Got to Rushville about 2:30pm. Not the longest day of the trip, but still a push, with the wind and all. There was some nice scenery, but it didn’t last long. For the most part, just a lot of nothing.
