My host took me on a major driving trip today (in his car, nice for a change to be off the bike and in a protected vehicle, especially after all that wind yesterday) and saw (from a distance) the Crazy Horse Monument. Right now, there is only the face. But there is the beginning of his horse. The horse is only a barely discernible outline on the scraped away mountainside. I took a zoomed in picture from the highway. It turned out okay for being a hand-held shot.
We checked out a couple of Sturgis-like towns (Custer and Hill City). Quaint and touristy. There were a few hundred bikes, but not anywhere near the thousands (or is it tens of thousands?) of bikes Sturgis draws. In Custer we stopped by the Purple Pie Place for some great homemade pie.
Next was Mount Rushmore. Very cool, inspiring, and majestic. Lots of pictures.
The Badlands National Park was next. I can see how it got its name. You definitely cannot walk across THIS expanse. About the only place you could walk is in the low lying areas between all the peaks. And if it were to rain, you’d REALLY be out of luck. There is nowhere to go. You can’t scramble up the sides because they are too steep and probably get quite slippery when they are wet.
Toadstool Geologic Park was quite a site. All kinds of strange formations.
Then it was on to Rapid City for dinner and home. Quite a day.

Remember, we are living vicariously through you.

Thanks Gary. Yes, things are going very well, even with challenges such as the high winds. Don’t worry, I’ll do my best to keep things current. I don’t want to disappoint anyone.
