The Metcalf Wildlife Management Area :
Nebraska Birding Trails | Summit Post
Hiked Metcalf. Covered about 5 to 7 miles in about 4 hours. We went “off trail” and hit some (relatively) rough terrain. Nothing too serious (after all we made it back), but it was more challenging than staying on the 4 wheel drive trails that were there. Where we could though, we did try to find game trails and walk on those. After all, they’re not stupid. They try to find the less challenging terrain whenever they can.
My host informed me this was one of Crazy Horse’s strongholds. The Cavalry knew they wouldn’t have much success going in to get him (and now I could understand why) so they had to coax him out.
There was a creek bed there, with some water in it, but not surprisingly it wasn’t flowing. This year this area definitely has seen less water than normal. Fields with corn without irrigation have had to be harvested early (and used for horse and/or cattle feed) before it is of no use at all.
During our hike, my host and I talked about my doing grant writing for a non-profit organization he formed. So during my down time, I’ll be doing research to teach myself grant writing.
