Fort Robinson : Wikipedia | StateParks.com
My host took me on another road trip in his car. Today we went to Fort Robinson, a former U.S. Army fort and a present-day state park. It is located in the Pine Ridge region of northwest Nebraska.
Beginning in January of 1878, and for the next 74 years, it has quite a military career. In 1919 at the end of WWI, it became the world’s largest quartermaster remount depot. It was used as a breeding and training center for horses and mules for the military. During World War II, the fort was the site of a K-9 corps training center. Later it was used to hold a German prisoner-of-war camp.
The fort was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and is now managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
